Symptoms of the rabies virus

The rabies virus is a dangerous viral disease, not as deadly as the influenza virus. african swine fever However, it is worth paying attention to because it attacks the central nervous system of warm-blooded mammals. It is transmitted through the saliva of a rabid animal through an opening in the skin, usually a bite, but sometimes a scratch or scrape can transmit the virus.

It is found mainly in wild animals that feed on animals and humans, such as foxes, coyotes, skunks, raccoons, dogs, and bats. In rare cases, people can get rabies from contact with other people or from eating raw meat or fish infected with the rabies virus.

Once a person has rabies, the only way to prevent death is to receive immediate treatment. The doctors prescribe a series of injections (shots) can help you to prevent the rabies virus causes symptoms and eliminate the rabies virus in the body. The most common sign of rabies in people is fever, headache, and drooling. Other signs include difficulty swallowing, difficulty breathing, and a general feeling of malaise. Some people may have problems moving or become paralyzed from the neck down. People in this stage are often described as “frozen by fear”.

A rabid animal will display many other symptoms in the course of the rabies infection. Animals alone are agitarán and pets active will be nervous or shy. The rabid animal may show aggression, biting everything it can reach. This phase, called stage furious or excitativa, lasts for a few days. Other symptoms at this stage may be confusion, irritability, restlessness, sensitivity to light and sound, excessive salivation, and hyperactivity.

A less common, but more deadly, stage is the paralysis or coma stage. In this stage, the virus takes over the muscles of the throat and jaw, causing difficulty breathing and choking. This phase is more likely to be confused with other diseases and contributes to underreporting of rabies cases.

Coma is usually followed by death within three days. In the United States, rabies is most often reported in raccoons, skunks, foxes, and bats. Other wild animals that can carry the rabies virus and possibly transmit it to people include coyotes, jackals, mongooses, and sables.

2. Treatment of rabies virus

The bite of a rabid animal (including bats) is considered a serious injury and should be treated with seriousness. The time it takes to develop symptoms of rabies depends on how close is the bite of the spinal cord or the brain, the severity of the bite and the amount of virus injected. The virus cannot be transmitted through the intact skin, but can be spread through the saliva that enters an open wound or into a mucous membrane, such as the eyes or mouth.

As rabies progresses, the animal becomes increasingly volatile. This change in behavior is called the prodromal stage of rabies and usually lasts only a few days. Calm dogs may become agitated or aggressive, and active pets will seek out a dark, quiet place to hide. Severe rabies can also cause seizures and paralysis, including difficulty breathing, excessive drooling, and staggering.

Once the anger reaches the brain, it is almost always fatal. Symptoms include severe headache, fever, difficulty swallowing, and muscle spasms, especially in the throat, which makes it difficult to breathe. Eventually, the breathing stops, and death follows in a few days.

Extensive studies of dogs, cats and ferrets have been shown to excrete rabies virus in their saliva several days before the onset of the clinical signs of the disease. No similar studies have been conducted for the species of wildlife, but it is known that the wild animals transmit the rabies virus before showing signs of rabies and is likely to continue forcing him to leave for some time after they appear the signs.

Because of this, anyone who has a possible exposure to a rabid animal should contact the local health department or state and follow their instructions. If possible, the animal that bit the person must be captured without further injury and sacrificed humanely so that his brain can be examined for rabies.

Until better treatments are developed, the best course of action for all potential rabies exposures is to receive post-exposure prophylaxis, or PEP. This includes extensive wound lavage, treatment with rabies vaccine, and human rabies immunoglobulin. If the risk is high enough, a rabies vaccine may also be given. tetanus.

3. Prevention of the rabies virus

Rabies is almost always fatal once symptoms begin, but it can be prevented with a series of injections. Pre-exposure treatment should be started as soon as possible after exposure and before symptoms appear. It may include vaccination and antibody injections, or it may involve a combination of treatments. In addition, people should avoid wild animals and any animals that appear sick. They should keep pets inside and supervise them when they are outside, and report stray animals to local authorities.

Vaccination of dogs, cats, ferrets and horses is effective to prevent rabies. Small pets, such as rabbits and guinea Pigs, can't be vaccinated against rabies, so they must be kept indoors or in a cage protected. People should not feed wildlife and the need to keep trash cans tightly closed and protected. They must also report on raccoons and skunks acting in a suspicious manner or attack the cattle, and they should not get close to bats at dawn or at dusk when they are most active, because it is more likely to be carriers of rabies.

Any person who is bitten by an animal you must wash the wound for 15 minutes with soap, povidone-iodine, or detergent, and then seek medical attention immediately. Must tell the doctor what type of animal the bit, where they found and how they behaved, if they can.

In many areas, we recommend a booster vaccine every three years for those who were bitten or arañados by an animal that is potentially rabid. If the bite was on the face or the neck, it is usually given a full series of injections. People who are at high risk should have a program of continuous monitoring, including blood tests to detect rabies antibodies and antigen-oral rabies, even without a bite or a scratch recent.

Wild animals should never be kept as pets, especially if they are unsupervised. People should observe all animals from a distance, and children should be taught to respect and stay away from wild animals, even if they appear tame. If a wild animal approaches a person, they should back away slowly and teach children to do the same.

It is important to remember that a rabid animal will act very differently than a normal animal, so people should not try to capture or kill the animal to prevent it from escaping. If a rabid animal is caught, it should be euthanized without damaging the brain so that a rabies sample can be tested.

4. Diagnosis of the rabies virus

If a person has been bitten or scratched by a potentially rabid animal (domestic or wild), it is important to wash the bite or scrape with soapy water or povidone-iodine to minimize the amount of viral particles that could enter the bloodstream. It is also recommended that the person seek immediate medical attention for possible exposure to rabies.

Once the virus reaches the brain, symptoms progress rapidly and typically include excessive salivation or foaming at the mouth, difficulty swallowing, staggering, paralysis, and seizures. A change in behavior is also common. For example, a normally friendly animal may become aggressive or unusually shy, or a nocturnal animal may be seen during the day.

Extensive studies in domestic animals (dogs, cats, and ferrets) indicate that the rabies virus is excreted intermittently in the animal's saliva several days before showing symptoms. However, to obtain a sample of the brain of an infected animal for the diagnosis ante-mortem remains a challenge due to logistical concerns and security, as well as to cultural or religious beliefs that prevent the autopsy or other invasive procedures.

A rabies diagnosis is usually confirmed by an antibody test in a laboratory. There are a number of options for testing, including traditional classical tests (fluorescent antibody test or FAb) and molecular assays such as chain reaction of the polymerase with reverse transcriptase (RT-PCR).

These techniques can detect viral RNA of rabies in a sample of saliva, cerebrospinal fluid, or other tissue samples from an animal or a human being and can provide a rapid diagnosis and very sensitive, however, these methods require a standardization rigorous and strict quality control to ensure accurate results.

We do not recommend attempting to capture or contain a wild animal that has shown signs of rabies, as the animal may be defensive and come back to bite them. If you see a wild animal acting strangely, call the local animal control for help. If you must kill the animal to prevent escape, do so without damaging the head to obtain a sample for the test. This is the best way to ensure a diagnosis of rabies timely and accurate.
